Who?

Reposted from comments in astrogirl2's LJ:

Doctor Who is a show that never caught on with me. What glimpses I had of it left me thinking, "Lame!" But Every. Smart. Person. On. My. Flist watches this show. So I am throwing it onto the marathon pile for this year.

That said, I am seeking advice from Whovians: there is quite a bit of old Who on Netflix. Should I start with that, or would it throw me off? Should I just start in with new Who?

I'm biased. I tried and failed to like the first Who run. I do very much like the 21st century Who.

Same here, though I'll admit I haven't been keeping up with it since the RTD era ended.

Start with the beginning of new Who, with Billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston. It's a great season.

I second this. I think older Who is an even more acquired taste. You don't need to know the back stories unless you really come to love it.

I know a lot of my flist liked it, which is why I was dismayed that I didn't. But granted, the special fx put me off after one episode. Plan to be a little more tolerant and go with the flow this time around.

Yeah, I love Old Who, but I did watch it in high school late at night. And certainly not in order. There's a certain nostalgia to the whole thing. The horrible props, etc. There are great episodes, but I wouldn't start there.

Start with New Who, and if you feel like going back, pick and choose from the Old Who. Also, if one Doctor doesn't grab you, try another. That's sort of the beauty of the show.

Isn't all supposed to be the same guy in a new body, though? Does he not have some kind of arc from life to life, growing as a person in some way?

I've watched Doctor Who for nearly all of my life so I'm quite familiar with both Old and New Who. Personally I'd start with New Who and if that clicks you can go backwards. It's not obligatory to like it though so if you don't, don't force yourself. I don't like every Doctor and I certainly don't like every Companion.

Well, I am planning to watch it with my GF as part of our regular Saturday TV Night. So if we settle in, we'll settle in for the long haul, or until we both pull out all our hair.

I would start with the first season of New Who. I never watched the old series, but that's not a necessity for enjoying the new run.

I am curious, Jane, when you first start taking an interest in Sci-Fi and Fantasy.

The list in this post a couple of years ago still sums up my opinions, except that all the stories mentioned are now on DVD.

Maybe I should be asking you: Is there a concise guide to the doctors, various spin-offs, etc?
