Thoughts?

I recently discovered a cavity in one of my molars--my first--and it's a doozy, since it created a crack in my tooth that goes up to the gum line (srsly folks, there is a way raw veggies are bad for you--when they're hard as rocks).

Anyway, my dentist sent me to the endodontist who wants to do a root canal. This, liked, freaked me out, because the only thing I know about root canals is what I see on TV. My mom shrugged it off, saying she's had several and they were no big deal.

My question is - the endodontist has a sedative he can use to veg me out during the process, but it will require I show up two hours early for the appointment, and have someone drive me to and from. Also, I will pretty much have to take that day off from work to "sleep it off," and since they don't want me driving for 24 hours, I'll have to stay home the next day, too (I can work from home the second day if it comes to that).

Do I really need to be vegged out for this? What are other people's experience with root canals?

Found the link to mine. Don't remember much of consequence.

It hurts to have your toe stubbed. Did they give you any pain meds after the local during the procedure?

They did the shots in my mouth but I don't remember anything else. I know there were a lot of them, because I can always feel sensation more than their initial estimation. I remember being happy how easy it was. I don't remember if they needed to top me up after they started. It's possible.

Was it just a local to the gums, or did they use an anesthetic that effected your consciousness? I am debating whether to get something that will make me groggy.

Local to the gums.

I've had lots of dental work done. The only pain I've experienced with a root canal was getting the numbing shot of novocaine (or whatever they use now). I've never gotten sedatives for dental work. although I'm extremely sensitive! But maybe your procedure will involve more than mine did.

It does take a long time, and you have a rubber/plastic dam over your mouth, so that might be a problem for you, too.

It can hurt afterwards--not a bad idea to take some ibuprofen or whatever before the numbing agent wears off.

They said it would take about an hour. I do have a gag reflex with the x-ray mouth blocks, but after I learned how to relax my tongue properly, that wasn't as bad.

I found it less hard to endure than some fillings I've had. The dam isn't as hard to put up with as X-ray blocks, but it does last for an hour or so. Good luck!

Thanks. Never had a filling, so my ignorance is a huge hole being filled up with anxiety....

I had a root canal under local anaesthetic and it hurt no worse than any other filling.

What I hear is that root canals have the reputation they do because they are often done on severely infected teeth, and severe infection for chemical reasons makes local anaesthetics less effective. So if you don't have a dental abcess (which I didn't either) it shouldn't be too bad.

I have no idea what getting fillings feels like*. And I am not sure if I have an abscess. I don't recall it mentioned. Will have to investigate what that is, too.

* This may be the source of my freaking out. I haven't had serious work done on my mouth since I was a teen getting baby teeth pulled and braces.

You'd know if you had an abcess! It would hurt like hell.

An abcess is the equivalent of a boil, but inside a tooth or between it and the gum. As mamcu says, if you had an abcess, you would be on the phone to the dentist screaming "get me an appointment NOW!".

For me it was no big deal (except when they had to crown it. the goo they use is gag-worthy). My only problem is I metabolize novacaine rapidly and usually require multiple intra op injections (but you pretty much only feel that first one)

I changed my appointment to a local. We'll see how it goes.
