Camp Nano Day... whatev

Okay, you know what I suck at? Coming up with interesting names for my fantastical creatures, secret groups, mysterious MacGuffins, and fictional concepts. I end up with some generic and literal name because I need a placeholder for a more preferred name I'll come up with later, except later never happens and then I start to think of these whatevers by the sucky name.

Need to work on that.

Could you do the generic name in Latin to make it sound fancier?

Latin names mostly makes stuff sound like an anatomical atlas.

What I want is something that sounds Mysteriously Historical. Like, the Rosecruicians. That group/sect didn't just pull that name out of hat, it has a long history with symbolism in the name. Names steeped in history and symbolism add realism to a story--no matter how far-fetched they actually are--because then it feels like they've been around a long time, with a history and politics and points of view.

I just finally finally got myself writing instead of outlining plotting and researching. Oof, having to go back through my research or start new research... but I don't seem to have a choice.

I get you - what I'm working on right now has both literary references and is set in my hometown, so I've made a point for the names to either be literary or actual names I've heard used growing up. It's something I would only know but it feels internally consistent for me. Could you pick a work, fictional or historical and take your naming from that?

Well, my critters are based in shamanistic mythos, which is many and varied, but my characters don't come from societies that practice shamanism (being primarily Judeo-Christian and/or modern European heritage). So any shamanistic terminology I used would end up being Appropriation, and kind of randomly chosen from Random Shamanistic Traditional #274, which feels, well, Random to me.

Some of this stuff is going to end up being from European J-C interpretations of shamanistic concepts, which is going to be tough to do, and some of it is going to be ripped off of New Age terminology (which makes me uncomfortable, but some of the characters would be most familiar with that school of thought, so it is what it is).

I just don't want it to end up being cliche. Which is why I'm dithering over it.
