Savory Garlic Thanksgiving

Despite my soreness, Thursday I walked D up into Haight-Ashbury, then we cut through Golden Gate Park into to the UCSF hospital area of the Inner Sunset (where I worked about ten years ago). After that we trundled down into Cole Valley, jumped on the bus and went to Hayes Valley, where they Painted Ladies victorians can be found, in Alamo Square park. Hayes Valley is also another place, besides the middle Haight, where I used to live back in my SF days.

After that, we returned to our hotel to primp up for T-Day dinner at my friend Gloria's. She is right around the block, and getting there an hour early proved to be two hours early as she insisted on preparing the entire dinner herself while she fed us cheese and crackers and champagne.

Did I say cheese? I meant this yummy "savory garlic cheese cake" Glo makes from scratch. She is a caterer and a pastry chef and wants to sell them for the holidays. Gloria invited a few old friends, all of whom I've met over the years, seven in all. We had turkey, of course, and stuffing with baked apples in it, mashed potatoes and gravy, Brussels sprouts sauted in olive oil, garlic, and pecans. I will tell you, I don't eat Brussels sprouts, but I watched Gloria cut them off the stalk, peel them open, toss like the a salad, and throw them in the pan. It must have taken her HOURS.

I SCARFED DOWN the Brussels sprout. OMG.

Then for desert, homemade pumpkin chiffon pie and ginger pudding and currants with homemade cream. I watched the pudding, made from scratch, boiling beside me in the crock pot while I got drunk on champagne.

I about tipped over into my place setting by 8 pm. Good thing our hotel was right around the block.

Today the plan is to go to the Museum of Modern Art. No shopping for these gals. The only catch is, we have to go downtown. Downtown on Black Friday!!! ChoMyGod!!

Brussel sprouts are really tricky. You can't eat them unless they are cooked. Cooked just right they are delicious. Cooked a little too long they are so very awful. Your friend Gloria knows the secret. ;o)

I cringe at the very notion of Brussels sprouts. Bleh! But I thought I'd eat a bite because she worked so hard on them. Before I knew it, I was shoveling them down.

My thought looking at them was, "I'll bet those people get sick of strangers taking pictures of their houses!"
