What's new is old again

Today is my 9th anniversary on Live Journal. I remember when LJ was the new thing we all drifted over to from the ATPo board, pretty much sealing the demise of its hey-day. Now it's the old thing people left for Dreamwidth or Facebook or Twitter three years ago, or for Tumblr nowadays. And I don't blame them. DW's looking pretty good these days. But if I switched, it would only be to take comments there instead of here, since I'm technically on both already.

I still prefer the journal format for my online interaction, because I am a woman of words. And more than one or two sentences per, tyvm. Which I think is true of other journalers on my flist/dwircle who are members of what shadowkat67 calls, "the online correspondence/frustrated writers club."

I am glad I have LJ and DW and Facebook to interact with my long-time friends, and my new friends.

Happy anniversary!!! Did you think your LJ would go on for 9 years when you started? I'm surprised I'm still doing it, but is still home base.

I'm finding Tumblr more fun than I thought it would be. There are words there!! You just have to define your tag searches very very carefully. A little scary too, because you just *never* know what might come up. The #writing and #creativity tags are great, #poetry really bad. Much more fun than Twitter.

There's always some new online platform. I remember debating whether I should get an online journal. Being a private journal-keeper for decades, it just seemed like exhibitionism. I remember debating whether I should join Facebook. It seemed sort of pointless. And I don't post much there because juggling filters is annoying, and I don't have access to it at work, where I spend big chunks of my time.

(Although, sadly, it's one of the primary ways I communicate with my immediate family, who live only miles away from me.)

I remember trying to do Twitter, and finding it really, really insanely antithetical. 140 words? Posted moment to moment to moment? Really?

I still don't like the division between LJ and DW. I hate having my online presence spread out in a hundred places. That's why I still point all the RSS feeds to my LJ friends page. I don't want to "bar hop" across the internet. I want a home.

Alas, next year, there will be some other new forum.

I'm still weirdly uncomfortable with FB. My real name OMG. I use it very differently than I do here. I only read on Twitter, and check it occasionally. Ann1962 is my online persona, most established certainly, so the others are like snacks, but the real nourishment is here. I don't like the LJ/DW division either, but will happily read over there. A couple of times a year, I will update all my LJ posts there. I think of it more as a backup of LJ than anything.

Updating to DW is a cool idea. Of course, it's a little late for me to do that, since I am cross-posting. I couldn't even transfer over my LJ if I decided to make a DW my base of operations, since that would double posts going back two years.

I find it difficult even to remember to check Facebook or my DW reading list. If I increase the number of places I haunt, eesh, well, I suck at dividing my attention.

I can't believe it's been that long! It's hard to imagine those years without LJ or ATPo. I don't mind checking Twitter or Tumblr to see what people are up to but they are very different things than the experience here.

Ooof, I hate having my online presence spread out in a hundred places. I like having a home base, where I know I'll see my buds.

I could rename my LJ to "Cheers". "...Sometimes, you want to go where everybody knows your name..."

the blog, no matter how 'old-fashioned' it is these days, remains my favorite way of communicating too and hey, it doesn't destroy cognitive functions like twitter, FB and tumblr so bonus.

Me, too. And yet, I find myself shuddering with writer's block at the thought of having a blog on my website platform. OMG, what to say??

trust me I wrestle with that 'what to say' thing all the time for Jana's blog.

We're really glad you've stayed here for so long. Hate to see LJ go--like ATPO, this community can be reborn in another place, but something will be lost in transition.

Happy LJversary! I haven't had as much time as I'd like for LJ lately, but it's still my go-to place. I cross post from DW, just so I have backup, but LJ is where I'm most comfortable. I rarely go to Facebook, because it just feels kind of alien to me, and I've never figured out how to make it comfy.
I'm glad you're still here!
I stumbled across an episode of Buffy the other night..The Gift. I was pulled back in time to the glory days of ATPO - I miss that excitement still.

I'm not going anywhere, but I might start taking comments on DW and cross-posting to LJ.
