Farscape

Okay, I've finished season one of Farscape and I'm still waiting for it to "get good." Everyone seems to gush over it, but I didn't see any episodes this season that were much better than those awkwardly-written filler episodes on Star Trek. Maybe I'm missing something.

I will rent season two, and hope it improves.

Farscape improves by the end of S1 (roughly between Chiana's arrival to the final) this is the sort of quality Farscape has. If you don't like it yet I dunno if you'll find S2 any better.

The second to the last episode was painfully bad. I kind of like the one with the fake wormhole Earth visit thingee, and the cliff hanger season ender was passable. There are still some characters I just can't bond with no matter what.

*looks up second to last* ah yes, that was a pretty stupid episode.

Yeah, Farscape has a lot of Weird Space Shit of the Week episode, which are very variable in qualities (some of which are downright bad, some are much better); the backbone of the series is the characters and their dynamics, though, and the overall plot which does get better in S2 IIRC.

my mom loved it. I never did figure out why

I dunno... it just seems the sort of science fiction show that someone who doesn't know much about science fiction might be impressed by. But if you immerse yourself in that genre, it seems silly and amateurish--the plots, I mean, not just the production values.

I adore Farscape, but it's not everyone's thing.
I'd say give season 2 a try.

Yes, but did you adore season one compared to other seasons?

I liked it from the start, but I really think that the character development and story arc starts to come together more in season 2, and season 3 just kind of broke my heart with the angst..

Oh, great, angst on top of everything else.

Let me guess. They kill of some regular characters just to advance the story line/character development of other regular characters?

Gee, where have I see that before overdone five gazillion times.

Not really. To say more would be too spoilery.

But I'd say that if the last few episodes of the first season didn't hook you, don't bother.

I am sorry, but if you don't like it by now, it's most likely going to be one of those shows that everyone you know likes and you don't. Because I was hooked by the second episode.

I have yet to find anyone I know who doesn't like it. That's what's so puzzling. It's like I'm missing something that I should be seeing.

I have a theory that everyone has one or two things that they can't stand that everyone they know loves. Maybe this is yours?

Yes, but figuring out exactly what it is that they find appealing in this that I don't is a genuine puzzle. If it was deliberately campy, I'd know right away. I can't stand camp. But it's not.

Yeah, now that I think about who you are and how you analyze things, I can understand why this would bug you.

I like a lot of the pop-culture humor of the show, the relationship between Crichton and Aeryn, the friendship between Crichton and D'Argo, and how the crew usually manages to screw everything up and still come through. Also, I have to admit that as an athletic nerd with a successful father whose shoes are hard to fill, I can really identify with John Crichton on many levels.

I like the characters of John and Aeryn. Chiana's growing on me. Zaahn sort of gets on my nerves sometimes, but she's okay. I loathe Rygel, and could do without D'Argo, srsly.

There's just one too many lamely-written alien-planet-of-the-week episodes. I mean, really, who *writes* this stuff?

I love Farscape, but I think season one is mostly boring! I think season two is much better and season three is mostly excellent. The introduction of Scorpius really improved the show for me.

He's a better villain that Crais was. I understand now how grief and guilt together can make you really irrational, but I never bought his obsession.
