Quote-worthy snippet:

You think in your arrogance you can peak behind the curtain, shed all culture and see these things for what they really are. That as a scientist, you aren't bound by the weight of your particular circumstances like an indigenous shaman would be.

The first thing you have to accept if you want to walk with the spirits is that you will see what you bring with you.

She didn't like hearing that, and a part of her couldn't accept it. She wanted to see beyond that, she wanted to touch the really real. And maybe that's why she'd become a scientist in the first place, because it made that alluring promise: this is real.

NaNo notes: It's interesting how knowing that you have an hour or so at best to do all your NaNo writing in a day that will be filled with other things gets you pounding out the most interesting stuff. You have a sliver of an idea and you're not even sure it's a good one, and if you had the luxury of time, you might decide it's silly or "needs developing first" or whatever, but you don't have time, all you have is a word count to feed, so you write it.

At the end of the month, I'll have a ton of stuff that might have little or no connection to each other, but in there somewhere, I hope, will be the kernel of a story.
