Quote-worthy snippet:

Somewhere below her feet, where the subways didn't rattle because they didn't have them in the Haight, water from the last rain dripped into the pools of street grime, human waste, and rat droppings. Down here, the electricity of criss-crossing junctions buzzed and crackled. Access was narrow and usually locked off by the city, but she had ways of slipping past it.

Interesting words used: I seem obsessed with sewers. The kind of obsessed only someone who hasn't spent a lot of time in them could be.

I got a bunch of kudos yesterday for reaching fifty percent, but my writing this month has been all over the place. It's not as if, at the end of the month, I will be 50,000+ words into the first draft of a novel. I'll be lucky if I have 10,000 or 20,000 words I can use. Which isn't bad itself, I realize, but I don't even know which 10 or 20,000 that might be. I get a lot of word count mileage out of rewriting the same bit three completely different, contradictory ways, undecided about which way I want to go.

It's like, if I set things in stone, I get bored of them, but if don't set a few things in stone, the story can't advance. And that, in a nutshell, is why this story hasn't advanced much in the past two years.

I may have finally found a way to make Boring Girl less boring by melding her with another, minor character (different than the last one I was considering), but as I worked on that, I hit a number of tangles that mired me in knots I still haven't entirely loosened.
