NaNoWriMo Day 13

New words: 1,625
Total words: 25,514
Goal: 50,000

25514 / 50000

Quote-worthy snippet/Interesting words used: Nothing that stands out.

NaNo notes: I've hit fifty percent, which isn't saying much for someone who goes back and forth between cheating and overwriting. I'm sort of hoping at the end of the month I can clip out those non-November words and still have my 50,000. For now, though, just having any words at all I can comfortably call "the first draft" is a vast improvement over the past two years.

On my big picture day, I decided the story was going to focus on two characters, one who would be assisting the other. But I found I couldn't figure out how to get them together, much less work together, until I knew better who each of them is before they meet, because that would dictate how they will meet and what sort of chemistry they might have.

So I have worked the past several days on story narrative that shows each of them in action, that gives each some backstory. I need to move on now to the two of them getting together and starting their adventure. But right now, I don't see their chemistry as entirely workable (Boring Girl is still boring!), so I plan to continue my character work and make adjustments to how I envision them as individuals to make it work better.

Or maybe I'll work on another section of the story entirely.

I have seen a news report about severe bad weather by you.....severe hailstorms, etc.

I hope you are ok.

Well, let's see...sunny and 75 degrees...for the next five days. Yeah, I'd say I'm fine. But thanks for your concern!

Go you! You're the word count queen!

Right now, I'm all over the place, writing characters who may fall out of the story and plot lines I bore of after a few days. I just hope *some* of this is salvageable.

But yay you! Being at 50% before Nov. 15 is great!

I do overwrite, as a rule.

Is it a problem for Boring Girl to be boring? If that's how she insists on being? Could you demote her to minor character and leave her boring?

I am still working on giving her a makeover.

Congrats. I love watching how you write.

And here I thought no one was reading my daily bibbles. My writing is always piece-meal and scattered.
Nov. 15th, 2010 12:26 pm (UTC)
I've been.

My writing becomes piecemeal when I get an idea for a future bit, or an add-on bit, and then I wait to integrate it until I get there. I'm mostly linear. I also have notes throughout the story for [add more here] or [edit heavily] etc.

At some point, I'll have enough pieces of the puzzle I'm actually happy enough with to see the outlines of a plot, but that time is not yet. The plot has to arise from the deepest inside, or I just lose interest in it.

One piece of advice I heard recently is if you have a character who isn't working and needs a massive overhaul, don't keep the same name. By giving her a new name, you create a new character and aren't locked into previous ideas.

Also, you are the boss of your characters, not the other way around. If one is killing the story, kick her to the curb. Don't try to fix Boring Girl. Fire her. Don't try to save her because you have time and words invested in her. She's not worth wrecking your story for.

Create a character you wish someone would write about. Create a character who cares about things that are important to you. Create a character who says and does the things you wish you could. In today's market, the females have to be strong and sassy. They need to want something and take steps to get it. That isn't boring. Ask your heroine what she wants. If she refuses to answer, ask yourself what you want.

Already gave her a new name. Worked on her this weekend. I am keeping some of Boring Girl's attributes, but the jury is out on what stays and what goes. Nice Girl goes.
