NaNoWriMo Day 1

New words: 1855
Total words: 1855
Goal: 50,000

Quote-worthy snippet:

The sewer tunnel was narrow here, like an escape from the womb, pink and oval, barely the width of his shoulders.

Interesting words used: masonry. For some reason, that word kept popping up.

NaNo is off to a good start. I gave myself a bit of a leg up by deciding that for day 1, I was just going to go through all those "writing prompt" snippets I'd gathered and write a paragraph or two describing the setting. Describing a setting is a relatively easy thing to do, for the most part. It's fairly neutral and gets the fingers moving on the keyboard, and that's all I wanted to accomplish for today, getting the fingers moving.

I didn't make it all the way through all my prompt-snippets, so I can continue this exercise tomorrow if need be. My main goal with NaNo overall this year is just to write and write on this story until something really "clicks." I know my theme, I know my characters, but I am still having a hard time getting my characters to embody that theme, that is, to have a story for them that really captures the feelings I have surrounding that theme, and would make the reader feel it, too. So needless to say, I have no outline to work off of.

The other interesting thing I did today, which both works towards my goal and pads the word count, is to write more than one alternative setting for a particular snippet. The kind of "alternative" where they couldn't both be true in a final draft. I'm going to do that as much as I feel the need to, because sometimes the first pass at something just doesn't "feel right," and I'm not allowed to edit. So, hey, all the words written, both keepers and non-keepers, count!

I am off now to come up with a game plan for tomorrow. I have a feeling that's how I will spend my month, looking at what I've done so far each evening, coming up with a plan to get the fingers moving the next day, and hope I hone in that elusive story.

I thought it was the most interesting thing to come out of the day.

In San Francisco, some of the older sewer tunnels have salmon-colored "masonry" on the walls.

Ah, now it makes sense. Otherwise it sounds like you're comparing girl-parts with sewers which is rather off-putting.

Out of context it is odd, that's true. But it really is about the sewer being narrow and pink.
