Well, it finally happened

Over a year ago, in fact, shortly after my kitty Laren passed, I found out my kitty Jezebel had a tumor in her elbow. The doctor was fairly certain it had metastasized from elsewhere in her body, and subsequent issues with her digestion indicated it was in her intestines as well. At the time of the original diagnosis, he gave me three options. I thought amputation of her leg would be too hard an adjustment for an elderly kitty, but I foresaw a decent quality of life for her going forward, so I wasn't ready to say goodbye, either. I just took her home with some pain meds, and darned if that kitty didn't have a good 15 months after that.

But today she took a turn for the worse and could not even stand up this evening when I got home from work. I took her to the emergency pet place. They told me her little system was "shutting down". So it was time.

Jez adopted me back in 1993, and I mean that literally. She was a stray in my apartment complex after her previous owner kicked her out for scratching up the furniture. My GF and I used to leave food on the patio for her. One day our room mate left the patio door open. Jez (named Cleo at the time, poor girl) ran right inside the apartment, up the stairs, into our bedroom, and jumped up on the bed. She plopped herself down beside me and that was that.

Laren gave me the death-stare of betrayal for weeks afterwards. Eventually, she got over it.

Jez was a good-natured kitty, very friendly to all my visitors, and as loyal as a pooch. She always curled up at my feet when I kicked back on the recliner, and could be found waiting outside my bedroom door every morning. I keep expecting her to appear to hang out with me like she has for seventeen years.

I have known since last July it was only a matter of time, but it's still always sudden, isn't it? I will miss her.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's never easy, even when we have time to try to prepare.

Oh, N., I'm sorry. After hearing so much about Jez, it was so nice to finally meet her in June. Such a sweet & friendly cat, & she seemed very happy. I'm glad you were able to give her those 15 good months, & that the end wasn't drawn out when it came. [[[[[HUGS]]]]]

I'm so sorry, Masq. Jez was such a sweet cat. I will always remember her curling up on the rug beside my bed and purring like crazy.
She had a lovely life with you, and I know you will miss her.
Rest in peace, Jezebel.

I was thinking of Jez yesterday, honestly. Of how proud she looked standing next to you on the arm of your chair with an 'I get to be up here beside the Boss.' look. So many cats bolt under the bed when visitors come.

I'm glad you had so much time to spend with her.

Oh dear, I got all teary reading this. I'm so sorry for your loss. Your Jez -- what a great, affectionate cat. Seventeen years is a good run but this will make you miss her all the more. Your story of the adoption is wonderful. She really did choose you.

I'm so sorry, she certainly knew what she was about when she chose you, and by the sound of it, you gave her a great life.
