Tech question

Can anyone recommend a good application for making video clips from DVDs? I.e., the kind that fan vidders might use to make vids, or for putting up clips on U-tube, etc? It can be for Windows or Mac (or both).

There's a Mac app called forty-two that lets you rip DVDs to .avi format.

Hubby edited the Star Wars prequels to something that didn't suck using the software that comes with the mac, iMovie and then burned it using iDVD. When he gets home, I'll ask if he used any other programs.

My suspicion is that iMovie itself doesn't rip the DVDs itself (copyright issues), but can only edit files that have already been ripped, but I'll be interested in what he has to say about it.

To rip it to the computer, he said he used Open Shiiva. That was a few years ago. Now it looks like the DVDRemaster is the way to go. You can get a free trial of it.

Looks like you'll need additional programs to rip commercial DVDs

Why does DVDRemaster tell me that the DVD is encrypted?
Most commercial DVDs are encrypted with the Content Scrambling System. Normally, the fair use provisions of copyright law would allow producing a personal copy of a DVD you already own, but various measures have been taken such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in the United States that confuse the matter, in that it makes the use of circumvention devices illegal.

Although these devices are not illegal in all countries, we have not included any decryption software with DVDRemaster. Instead, you can use free tools such as Fairmount in conjunction with VLC Media Player, Mac DVDRipper Pro, RipIt, MacTheRipper or 0SEx to decrypt your DVDs

Hope that helps

I have VLC Media Player, which is what I play AVI files on.

I use DVD Shrink. Or, rather, used, since I haven't made a fanvid in years now. It's easy to use, though:

For Mac OS X, HandBrake or Mac the Ripper.
