Home improvement progress report

Now I remember why I didn't want a house where I had to do yard work. It never ends. I whacked all the weeds in my backyard, then pulled what remained up from the roots, and salted the earth. And that is literally; I was using salt and vinegar as natural weed retardants. Knowing full well that if it worked, it would prevent anything else from growing, too, 'cause that was the idea. Then I waited for the sun to beat down on all that until the ground was hard and dead.

This morning, the plan was to put a cloth covering down on the former flower beds so I could fill each of them with landscaping stones (or "hardscape" as they call it in these parts). After that's done, I plan to bring life back to the yard with pots and planters and other decorative items. Nice and controlled life. Because I'm tired of stepping out there every Spring and seeing weeds everywhere as high as my eye. This Spring it's been especially bad, and early, due to the heavy rains we had this Winter. The weeds are flowering, and kind of pretty, and I've put up with it for two years because of the pretty. And my total lack of interest in gardening. But weeds also attract bugs, and keeping the weeds trimmed back enough to keep the bugs at bay...too much damned work.

So I stepped outside to get to work this morning on the coverings, and discovered that my cold, dead earthen beds had been littered with the little maggoty-sized orange conifer cones. Everywhere. In the space of only a few days! My neighborhood is blessed with many tall, shady trees, which do make things pleasant, but they also litter the backyard with maggot-cones, pine needles, and every Spring, this weird chartreuse dust.

As I picked those maggot-cones out of the soil one by one, it occurred to me that after I finished laying down my stones and clay pots and etc, I could expect this crap strewn all over my stones as well. Agh! I'm going to have to buy myself a leaf blower, aren't I? Jeez.

One good thing I can say about yardwork: it beats the rowing machine for exercise, because at least it accomplishes something, and is therefore "exercise" I was gonna do anyway.

You can't underestimate the calories you burn exercising in the yard doing something useful. Sometimes it hurts more, though, because of the weird positions -- like shoveling snow, one side uses more muscles than the other.

I always prefer exercise "I was gonna do anyway." And the funny thing is, I have lost all the weight I wanted to lose and am learning now how to maintain my present weight, and I still lost one pound last week!

I know from jungles, 'cause mine was one in March. That's why I'm getting so drastic with it. Even though I was neglecting it, it grew and grew. Die, plants, die!!

Well, a patio home, which has a paved back patio with a few flower beds, and one small flower bed in the paved front patio. Not a whole lot. A landscaping company hired by the HOA takes care of the front and side yards, which are considered common area.

Nature always wins.

I'm going to take that as a portent that my efforts are d00med.

"Green thumb" Jane couldn't *possibly* have weeds! I mean, your last name is a tree, for heaven's sake!
