Real Californians don't wear shorts

Well, they do, but at best they are capri pants or bermuda shorts. If you see someone in California with shorts above their knees, they're a tourist. And you won't see as many shorts as you expect to see. Why? Because when you live somewhere where the weather is always mild, shorts are an any-time kind of clothing, and conversely, pants are an any-time kind of clothing, and pants get you into more places than shorts. Only people from places that get Hot in the summer see any warming in the weather as a reason to wear shorts. Only people from places that get Cold in the winter think the coats come off in April or May and stay off until September or October.

In my home state, it's pants and jackets anytime of the year.

Which is why I looked silly today walking down Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz in shorts and my white, white legs. At least I had my windbreaker on so as not too look like a complete tourist. I almost didn't pack the windbreaker; I almost didn't pack any pants. I finally decided both would be nice on the plane home because planes are so friggin' cold and did you know they charge you for those little blankets now?

I pack for the place I'm leaving, not the place I'm going. Which is why I showed up to Gatherings in Chicago and New York in July in long pants, long sleeve shirts, and a leather jacket. I actually forgot how to wear shorts when I lived in SF. I had to go out and buy shorts my first summer in Arizona. No, I take that back. I didn't get around to buying shorts until my second summer ('08). Old habits die hard. I still need to invest in more short-sleeved shirts.

But please note: downtown Santa Cruz is awesome for bookstore shopping, whatever you wear. And sidewalk cafe' sitting. And parking tickets after you spend too much time doing the above.

PS: It's a grand-nephew.

Also, you wear skirts, so that's a cool option I don't take. I don't think it was a girl-girl thing. It was the oddness of constantly being in long pants with someone who was constantly in shorts. I think any two people might encounter that.

Yes, I love skirts, especially in the summer.

It occurs to me that Dario is actually very into shorts, and so we were often the shorts/long pants combo. Maybe I'm just immune to the lure of shorts, period.

I figured it was probably a good idea to take up the habit of wearing them, living in Az and all, and decided to emulate her.
