I just wanna say...

I am not going to go see the new Star Trek or Terminator: Salvation until I'm sure they don't MANGLE canon to sheer unrecognizability. Anybody heard anything?

Seen the former, but wouldn't be able to say, not my area of expertise.

It was fun. Pretty FX. And I liked the guy who played Spock.

There are some non-spoilery but informative reviews for Star Trek on IMDB.

Really non-spoilery?

For what it's worth, Star Trek is currently at 100% at Rotten Tomatoes, after a tally of 28 reviews.

Is that good or bad?

100% is Fresh, i.e. every single review was positive.

IMDB says it's a complete "Reboot" of the original series. Maybe I will wait to hear what the old fogies think of it!

One of the very positive reviews was from someone who own "3 costumes, attend conventions and appear in "Trekkies 2", and yet loved Enterprise because from the first episode I simply said its was in an alternate universe, its the same but different. I view this film in the same light, same but different.

Oh, that's the one mental trick I *cannot* do. Have no desire to have to do.

Hmmm...Will Wheaton seemed to like it, and I usually trust his judgment on Things Trek.

I heard Trek is doing some alternate timelines handwaves, and of course the Terminator franchise is all about time travel so I can forgive some canon crunching.

I'm afraid to see the new Star Trek. For one thing, Leonard Nimoy will always be Spock to me, and the guy they have playing Spock now will always be Sylar to me. Also, I have problems with how hi-tech everything looks when that's inconsistent with how cheesy and old-fashioned everything looked in Star Trek TOS. Like what are we supposed to think of that, like it wasn't telling the truth about how advanced the 23rd century is or something? I know it's fiction but I like my fiction to feel like it could be true and that sort trips my suspension of disbelief.

Also, what's the status of women in the reboot? It's not like I like women being oppressed but the canon says they wore short, teeny little skirts until the more enlightened era of Picard's time. Feh. So if I see female equality, it'll feel like a retcon even though normally I'm all for female equality.

Am I making sense?

Leonard Nimoy apparently plays a Spock role in the movie, although I have not spoiled myself as to what.
