Home improvement progress report

(1) Clear-cut my back patio. Pulling weeds, bagging and hauling them (15 trash bags full), sweeping the flagstone of pine needles and debris, spraying round-up in all the cracks. I still need to dig up the roots of the biggest weeds so they won't grow back next year, but those things are the size of my fist and have deep tendrils, so tougher measures will be required.

(2) Did #1 so I could have the patio cover rep over to give me an estimate on retractable awnings. Turns out my patio door wall is too narrow for their ordinary retractables, and the ones with alternate technology are v, v expensive. So now I'm contemplating whether to do a fixed fabric awning (relatively inexpensive, but not much coverage), or a wood/metal patio cover (I like this idea, but no sun for the kitties), or a lattice patio cover (some sun for the kitties, but more expensive than the solid patio cover and not as shady).

Definitely getting blackening screens for the sunniest windows in the living room, though. They will pay for themselves in lower AC bills in a summer or two.

(3) Stained the floating mantle destined for the fireplace. It was still blotchy, so instead of rubbing the stain in, I slathered it on like paint. You lose the wood grain, but it looks presentable.

(3) Stained the three-tier shelf that used to belong to my father and grandmother. It just needed a fresh coat of color, it's been banged up a lot over the years.

(4) Put a coat of polyurethane on the three-tier shelf. I want to poly the fireplace mantle as well, but I'm thinking it needs another coat of stain first.

(5) Carved petroglyphs into the interior walls of my clay cave. It is in the process of drying before being fired. It will go through two different firings, apparently, and after the second one, I am going to cover the surface of it with some cool moss I found at Michael's Arts and Crafts. That way it will look more like a hillock, and less like a Thanksgiving turkey.

(6) Bought a 4x6 blue cotton rag rug and proceeded to cut off the tassles and sew the nubs under the edge of the rug, then paint the edges with fabric paint to bring in the accent colors (black and taupe) in the kitchen. Ran out of fabric paint. Bought more at Michael's. Rug only partly painted.

(7) Poked at TD 216. Sort of barely. I need to get back into it, but finding the time is a challenge.

(8) Um...did some work at work.
