Retractable awnings!

I have become an uber Home Improvement geek. We know this. Not because I like doing-it-myself (I don't, most of my diy projects are half-done because I'd Rather Be Writing), but because I want my home to be a Cool Place to Hang Out.

Anyway, I have been contemplating the idea of getting a patio cover for my back patio. If it were just me, I'd get one ASAP, because southern exposure brings in a LOT of sun in the Arid Zone, and will do so especially in the upcoming months. Vertical blinds won't block it out. In fact, those things are close to useless.

But see, there's my cats to consider. They don't have any windowsills to lounge upon because the windowsills in this house are too narrow. They only have the patio doors, and they can lay on the floor between the glass and the vertical blinds and sun themselves. You can't deprive kitties of sunshine! Especially when you are a mole-person who prefers to keep all the windows covered. If I put up a patio cover, the sunshine would never enter the living room, ever, ever. My cats would mutiny and my mother would mutter to herself passive-aggressively.

But I found a business in the area that does retractable patio covers!! How cool is that? The kitties can relax in the morning sunshine, and I can make the Bad Late Afternoon Glare GO AWAY.

It's perfect.

Let's just hope it's not pricey.

That would require I open the blinds on my windows. Not gonna happen. With the mini-blinds, the cats can slip underneath and not really open them.

I say the cats are very important to consider! Retractable sounds like the perfect compromise.

Hope they don't look dorky.
