I managed to do some writing this week despite my brother's visit. 1,209 words of it, in fact, as well as finishing TD 215. I'm not entirely happy with the original fic I wrote, and I think that's because I don't enjoy this casting about I'm doing. I'm experimenting, searching for my story, and I haven't found it yet. But I don't feel daring and creative. I feel lost, stymied.

What I do have is (1) a list of story kinks I think would engage me if they had a cohesive story infrastructure to hold them, and (2) a growing collection of prose blurbs, most of which don't engage me or excite me very much. Engagement, excitement, or the lack thereof--that's what's stopped me in the past from finding a good, solid original writing project I could sink my teeth into and complete. And it seems to be haunting me yet again.

So what'd I write this week...I started out working from my research notes on supernatural creatures Wednesday evening, trying to use them to prompt fictional prose. And they did--I wrote and everything, but like I said, I wasn't real excited about anything I wrote. On Friday evening, I went back to my single-word prompts, looking for the words that were most evocative, and wrote from some of those.

"Evocative" meaning they hook me, they touch the story that's buried deep down in there, somewhere. Because I feel like there is a story deep down in there, in my subconscious, unconscious, whatever it is, and I've got to excavate for it.

I went to bed Friday night, and a short blurb started writing itself in my head. I didn't have time to write it down until Saturday afternoon, but it added a bit to my word count. And it's interesting, but it barely scratches the surface of the story deep down. I don't know how to bring that story deep down to the surface; I just don't know.

It's frustrating.
