You. Go watch Grimm.

So after a three+ month hiatus, Grimm returns tonight. I was sort of watching it perfunctorily before the hiatus, but during the hiatus, I purchased season 1 and season 2 (thus far) on Google Play.

One of the critics who has reviewed the show noted that it improved markedly on rewatch. I have to agree with that. Episode to episode, it views like a supernatural procedural with stand-alone episodes that seem to basically be the same thing each time. Human bad guy (or other character) are not what they appear to be, and only Nick Burkhardt, the "Grimm" can see that they are also some kind of animal/hybrid thing ("wessen" pronounced with a 'v' sound in English).

But what you miss unless you're watching carefully (or rewatching a couple times) is the complex world-building that is going on in puzzle pieces from episode to episode. How these wessen span the globe and meld into human society, how they were once under the rule of a group of families known as the "royal families," who it would seem are fully human (that is, not hybrid creatures), but not any obvious national royals anyone would have heard of. How the grimms (humans who have a hereditary ability to see the wessen for what they are and the strength to combat them) have either (a) killed the wessen systematically or (b) kept them under control at the behest of the royal families. How the royal families are out of power and have formed a secret society network to take control of business, governments, and religion and win their power back.

And how Nick is not your ordinary grimm. He is a cop who only harms wessen who hurt humans (or other wessen). And what he doesn't know, yet, is that his boss, the police captain, is a bastard member of one of the royal families, who seems to be at odds with the royals' goals, but also seems to be grooming Nick to be his own personal grimm for an agenda as yet unclear. I doubt it's a good one, since he conspired to have Nick's aunt, also a grimm, murdered.

I'm just glad it's back. I was wondering as to why the hiatus was so darn long

Yes, missed Rosalie quite a bit while the actress was on maternity leave.

I had to Google it, I was getting so cranky about her being "pushed aside" on the show and her role handed over to her hapless boyfriend.
