Live? I wonder what production you will see in your area. The cast for this show was excellent.

Great show, and a lot more fun than the book.

Really? I had hoped the book would clear up some inconsistencies I saw between the mythology of the stage musical and the 1939 film, which I watched Saturday night.

No, one of the problems is that the book is based only on the mythology of Baum's books, not the film. The musical actually rewrote a great deal of the plot, in order to make it synch up with the movie, given that most people attending would be more familiar with it. Also, the Elphaba/Galinda friendship is only a small thread, which the musical made the central story. Lots of other changes, too. For example, Fiyero isn't the Scarecrow in the book.

Well, I also intended to read Baum's book as a way to gauge the 1939 film against the mythology of the play. To see how much Hollywood twisted it into a black-and-white situation.

The book is pretty black and white as well.

Well, that's what I figured. It was published in 1900.

Although the main mythology inconsistencies I was curious about were the origins of the Tin Man and scarecrow. Because Fiero as the scarecrow didn't quite make sense to me, in terms of what he seemed to know as a character in the 1939 film (unless the play is fudging it that he was play-acting all along to carry out E's plan).

Totally OT--apologies.

Masq, do you know anybody out there who likes fish (aside from your cats, that is)? If so, could you pass along this note from someone trying to find a home for some nice koi:

Alas, no, but be sure to run it by CW, Superplin, and Rahirah. They may have more zen friends than I.
