I've been thinking a lot about plot as I get deeper into my NaNo writing. I know you're not supposed to think about plot during NaNo, but there's something to be said about the psychology of investment. If you spend time, or money, or in this case, words on something, you start to think it's the way things ought to be. And if it's not the best way the story could go, you need to stop and rethink before you walk 50,000 words down the wrong path.

You are absolutely correct, of course. I'm thinking that for people who follow the suggestions of official NaNo, only the real pros can finish and have much worth keeping, let alone much worth anyone else reading, at the end.

I write whatever I need to write, whether it's backstory, notes, five versions of the same scene, or whatever's useful. Which means a good 75% of what I have when I'm done NaNo isn't actual story narrative that will make it into the first draft.
